While feeding the people is the most urgent in the immediate future, a second project, which will be long-term, is the creation of a sustainable community, with the vision to follow the excellent role model established by Anna Hazare in Maharastra. After creating ample and permanent water supply and agriculture, we would move beyond his vision to create numerous agri and agrico-industries. In addition we would develop concrete service projects, such as a home for the elderly /nursing home, a home for the disabled, home for destitute women, individual low-cost homes for refugee populations and severely impoverished people, and more.
The goal of this project is to create a completely sustainable community from both ecological and economic standpoint, with ample water supply, electricity, fuel, agriculture and on-site industries, so that it can serve as a role model for people around the world. As water crisis and food shortages loom large on the horizon, such communities will no longer be a luxury. They will become an absolute necessity. Hence this project is being undertaken with a sense of urgency and speed.
The most critical factor in creating a sustainable society today is water. All other agricultural strategies, all societal, cultural, moral and spiritual strategies, all political and economic strategies, cannot work without water.Water is the fundament of life. At present there is acute water shortage on every continent of the earth. Water conservation methods are not difficult to implement. Hence, in any plan for creation of a sustainable community, the issue of water must predominate.The second critical factor is agriculture and agricultural self-sufficiency. We need to study methods of organic, non-GM farming and indigenous seed cultivation such that our community will be self-sufficient from the standpoint of ample food for all its residents.
Creating a sustainable community is a longer-term plan of Hearts Healing Hunger. However, already we are laying the groundwork via feasibility studies, search for land and creation of a large database of persons who even now are ready to come and help build this community. |
